COALITION WATER POLICY ANNOUNCED

13 August 2010

“The federal Coalition’s water policy announced this week recognises that adjustment to water reform will need to deal with the socio-economic change that is expected with the forthcoming Murray Darling Basin Plan,” QFF CEO Dan Galligan said.
“The commitment for an extra $300M for water-efficient irrigation infrastructure and $200M to help communities adjust is a good start.
“Queensland irrigators will also be happy with a Productivity Commission-ABARE study into the socioeconomic impact of water reductions.
“We know water reform is necessary – but these studies would make sure it gets done right, without damaging regional communities.
“The original intent of the Water Act 2007 was to balance socioeconomic and environmental needs.
“This policy at least recognises that this intent has been lost.”
Mr Galligan added that Queensland farmers would also be pleased with Tony Abbott’s commitment to fix the Menindee Lakes in one year.
“Engineering solutions are also an important part of the equation to fixing the Basin. Irrigators use their water efficiently; the community deserves confidence that environmental water is being used efficiently too.”
“The farm sector has known for years that a sustainable water solution for Broken Hill requires better water management for Menindee lakes which in turn will ease the pressure on the Northern part of the Murray Darling Basin.”
