Rural Discovery Day
Whether it's learning about beef production from paddock to plate, how salad ingredients find their way from the field to our supermarkets, or discovering how bio-security sniffer dogs are protecting Australia's primary industries from pest and disease threats — Rural Discovery Day has it all! This year the event will take place in the John Reid Wool Pavilion at the RNA Showgrounds on Thursday October 15, 2009.

Rural Discovery Day is a free, fun, educational and hands-on experience of Queensland’s primary industries students. This year, we are accepting students from Year 3 to 6 so it’s important that if you are interested, you save the date and be sure to fill in the registration form attached.

As a major part of Primary Industries Week, Rural Discovery Day provides an opportunity for young Queenslanders to learn about the valuable contribution our primary industries make to the State.

Rural Discovery Day is aimed at primary school students from years three to seven and provides an opportunity for South East Queensland students to discover some of the realities of our primary industries. Presentations are scheduled in 30 minute sessions throughout the day to which class groups are rotated giving full access to the range of participating industries.

Who are the presenters at Rural Discovery Day?
Industry groups who have booked in for Rural Discovery Day in 2006 to present include: Brisbane Markets, Canegrowers, Cotton Australia, CSIRO Education, AgForce Cattle, AgForce Grains, AgForce Sheep & Wool, Australian Banana Promotions, Barnyard Babies (animal petting), BC’s Coffee, DPI&F Fire Ants, Nursery & Garden Industry of Queensland, PetPEP, Queensland Beekeepers, Queensland Dairy Farmers, Queensland Museum, Rainbow Ridge Coffee, and Sunny Queen Eggs.

The day will provide youngsters with the opportunity to:

§ Meet some of our primary producers who are using innovative and entrepreneurial approaches within one of our oldest industry sectors
§ Re-discover how primary industries connect with everyday life for all Queenslanders - through food, fibre and foliage
§ See first-hand that Queensland's primary industries are vibrant, viable and sustainable - contributing more than \\\\\\$10 billion to the economy each year and contributing significantly to the economic welfare of both regional and urban communities.

By providing a fun and interactive environment, students can experience first-hand the contribution primary industries have on their lives and the diversity of the industries that make up this important sector.
