Primary Industries Week 2010

What is Primary Industries Week?

Primary Industries Week was developed in 1996 to build and enhance public awareness and understanding of the value and importance of primary industries in Queensland which are now worth almost $11 billion per annum and contribute significantly to the economic growth of both regional and urban communities.

Primary Industries Week 2010

The 2010 Queensland Primary Industries Week will be held from April 19 to 23.

This year, Primary Industries Week consists of four events:

  • Opening Launch at the Queen Street Mall

  • Rural Discovery Day
  • Rural Press Club Closing Luncheon

Opening Launch at the Queen Street Mall - Monday April 19 2010

This is the first year this event will be held for Primary Industries Week. The aim of the event will be to showcase Primary Industries of Queensland to the wider public.

All too often many people are not given the opportunity to know or understand what the agriculture industry is all about.

Rural Discovery Day - Thursday April 22 2010

The 2010 Rural Discovery Day will be held on Thursday April 22 at Expo Place at the RNA Showgrounds.

Whether it's learning about beef production from paddock to plate, how salad ingredients find their way from the field to our supermarkets, or discovering how bio-security sniffer dogs are protecting Australia's primary industries from pest and disease threats — Rural Discovery Day has it all!

Rural Discovery Day is a free, fun, educational and hands-on experience of Queensland’s primary industries. This year, we are accepting students from Year 3 to 7 so it’s important that if you are interested, you save the date and be sure to fill in a registration form.

As a major part of Primary Industries Week, Rural Discovery Day provides an opportunity for young Queenslanders to learn about the valuable contribution our primary industries make to the State.

Rural Discovery Day is aimed at primary school students from years 3 to 7 and provides an opportunity for South East Queensland students to discover some of the realities of our primary industries.

Presentations are scheduled in 20-30 minute sessions throughout the day to which class groups are rotated giving access to a range of participating industries.

Who are the presenters at Rural Discovery Day?
Industry groups who have booked in for Rural Discovery Day in 2010 to present include: AVA PetPEP, Avocados Australia, Biological Farmers of Australia, Biosecurity Queensland Control Centre, Brisbane Markets, CANEGROWERS, CSIRO Land & Water, AgForce Cattle, AgForce Grains, AgForce Sheep & Wool, Growcom, Horticulture Australia, Nursery and Garden Industry Qld, Qld Beekeepers, Qld Dairyfarmers' Organisation, RNA, and the University of Queensland.

The day will provide youngsters with the opportunity to:
• Meet some of our primary producers who are using innovative and entrepreneurial approaches within one of our oldest industry sectors
• Re-discover how primary industries connect with everyday life for all Queenslanders - through food, fibre and foliage
• See first-hand that Queensland's primary industries are vibrant, viable and sustainable - contributing more than $10 billion to the economy each year and contributing significantly to the economic welfare of both regional and urban communities.

By providing a fun and interactive environment, students can experience first-hand the contribution primary industries have on their lives and the diversity of the industries that make up this important sector.

Closing Luncheon - Friday April 23 2010

The 2010 Primary Industries Week Luncheon will be held on Friday April 23 with about 150 industry and business people expected to attend.

The event is held in conjunction with the Rural Press Club at the United Services Club and is a key event of Primary Industries Week, as it has the opportunity to bring together industry and farmers alike.

The guest speaker and topic of the luncheon presentation are a key feature to the event. Agriculture is connected by many businesses and stakeholders. The Rural Press Club luncheon is a chance to brief some of the key stakeholders such as the banking, finance, legal, consultancy, government and industry players about the state of play in the agricultural sector. This year’s speaker Mick Keogh, Executive Director of the Australian Farm institute will treat the crowd with his lively topic “Can we feed the world and reduce greenhouse emission at the same time?”.

Please click here for more information on the luncheon or to book your table.
