07 Jul 2009 QFF FORUM WILL DISCUSS $34BILLION IN GROWTH IN AG BY 2020

Queensland Farmers’ Federation (QFF) will look to discuss how Queensland Agriculture can increase growth to $34 billion by 2020 at the upcoming Sustainable Agriculture Forum this week. The forum will be held on Thursday, July 9, at the Sebel & Citigate in Brisbane from 8.45am.

QFF CEO Dan Galligan said that this year even more so than usual, we have seen that the Australian economy needs Agriculture.

“While most other sectors of the economy have struggled to hold their ground, the farm sector has grown over the past four quarters of national accounts,” Mr Galligan said.

“The primary industries portion of the economy is not to be ignored. If taken from a value chain perspective the sector contributes over 10 per cent GDP to the national economy,” he said.

Mr Galligan said it is imperative that we invest in agricultural productivity.

“The world’s population is growing, and the agricultural sector needs to grow in order to keep up with the demand.

“Public policy, resource condition and allocation along with the science around climate change indicates that far from expanding our capacity to produce food, we may be restricting it.

So how will this dilemma be met?

It is QFF’s hope that these questions will be discussed at this weeks’ Sustainable Agriculture forum in Brisbane.

With thanks to the Federal Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) and the Queensland Department of Environment and Resource Management (DERM) for their support.
