QFF welcomes new LNP agricultural strategy
16 September 2011
THE Queensland Farmers’ Federation welcomes the LNP’s release of their Agriculture Strategy – Queensland Food and Fibre: Feeding the New World, A 2040 vision for Queensland Agriculture – as a very positive contribution to the discussion about the future of agriculture in Queensland.
The LNP released their plan earlier today, a cornerstone of which is a desire to double the volume of food produced in Queensland by 2040.
“The Queensland Farmers’ Federation have been looking for a blueprint for the $14 billion agricultural industry in this state. Clearly the LNP have spent some time listening to industry views in forming this document,” QFF CEO Dan Galligan said.
“We have seen growth targets from these types of documents before, but this time, the LNP plan commits to backing that target up with a set of deliberate strategies.
“It is particularly pleasing to note the LNP are showing their commitment to protecting Strategic Cropping Land but importantly they are also looking to go a step further by identifying the areas and opportunities for growth in our farming capabilities.”
Mr Galligan concluded by saying that “Clearly there is a lot of detail that we are yet to see and it is in the implementation of these strategies that the difficulties really come. Notwithstanding this, a plan to grow the agricultural sector, which is a cornerstone of the Queensland economy, is a welcome step forward.”
