Economic studies have found that banana farmers participating in the Banana Best Management Practice (BMP) program have improved their business profits.
Since their BMP program uptake, farmers have made changes including automated fertigation, sediment traps, using BMP recommended fertiliser rates, stabilised roadways, laser levelling and contouring, improved inter-row management and growing a canola crop during a two year fallow period.
Case studies about three farms showcase a mix of BMP practices that were implemented and, in all instances, these changes proved profitable for their farms.
Office of the Great Barrier Reef’s Science Program funded these case studies with delivery by the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries.
