The Queensland Farmers’ Federation with its members and support from the Queensland Government have now delivered 25 per cent of the Energy Savers Plus Project Extension energy audits.
To date, 1,968,921 kWh in energy savings amounting to $666,478 in cost savings have been identified across a range of farm types and technologies.
Easy wins with simple LED light replacements on farm can provide a low-cost option. The audits identified 5,444 kWh of savings in this category with added benefits including LEDs being a superior light source, having a lower operating temperature and an increased life span.
Of the 47 audits completed, thirty-five efficient pump upgrades have been recommended at an average cost of $16,997 and a payback of 4.6 years, targeting energy and water use efficiency. Upon implementation, these recommendations can provide positive production outcomes for farms, lowering operating costs, and the potential to increase yields.
Twenty-seven additional solar systems producing 630,649 kWh have been recommended for installation with the potential to save 510 tonnes per annum of CO2-e emissions.
A previous audit of AustChilli in Bundaberg demonstrates how these savings can be achieved with a large solar system, LED lighting and refrigeration upgrades resulting in significant dollar savings.
