Last year six graduates started their new career in agricultural extension through the Queensland Government funded Reef Extension Agriculture Work Placement Initiative.
The graduates were placed within NRM or agricultural organisations from Mossman to Gympie with the explicit purpose in helping to foster and mentor the next generation of extension professionals across the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) catchments in Queensland.
Holding a bachelor of Agricultural science, from Curtin University, Western Australia, graduate Zoe Eagger was placed with the independent agronomic solutions provider, Farmacist. Based in the Mackay and Burdekin region, Farmacist specialises in precision agriculture and creating innovative management systems.
Zoe relocated from Western Australia, with no previous sugarcane knowledge. However, in the short 8 months she has been with the program, she is now confidently presenting at grower meetings, creating industry publications and actively participating in innovative research projects funded by various industry boards.
“Without a program such as the one Queensland Farmers Federation (QFF) has provided, I wouldn’t be where I am now. It is so critical for emerging graduates to be placed in a work place where they can learn and be guided by industry professionals and this program has certainly given me that opportunity,” Ms Eagger said.
“My time spent with Farmacist has been invaluable; I have access to not only to their expert staff knowledge but access to their growers and support network. Farmacist has been nothing but welcoming.”
“The growers have been my biggest teachers, and the support my mentors have given me has developed my skills and knowledge.”
“The funding QFF has provided for learning activities and opportunities, such as attending industry relevant workshops and chemical training accreditation, has enabled me to travel widely throughout Queensland. The team at QFF team are incredibly supportive, I have never felt alone during this experience.”
“In terms of my extension role, I have learnt how dynamic and adaptable one must be to deliver effective extension and how vital trust and relationship building with growers is.”
“I believe that one of the keys to effective extension is to truly listen to growers’ needs and deliver your messages in a transparent way where both parties benefit.”
“The stand out for me during my short time in the agricultural industry is how truly passionate growers are about what they do, and how the health of their land is always at the forefront of their mind.”
“I have a newfound respect for growers and admire how versatile they are as they consistently overcome challenges.”
“I would encourage any graduate wanting to pursue a rewarding career in extension to apply for the Reef Extension Agriculture Work Placement Initiative, you won’t regret it.”
“Being involved in agricultural extension is truly is one of those industries where you can be the change you want to see.”
