10 Things to Know – 15 January

  1. QFF alongside industry and community groups continue to call for the scrapping of a proposed Carbon Capture and Storage project in the Great Artesian Basin. Groundwater modelling contained in the Glencore project’s Environmental Impact Statement suggest unsafe levels of arsenic, lead and cadmium, and other metals, will be mobilised following the injection of CO2 into a water producing aquifer. The federal government has announced that the Hon Dr Craig Emmerson will lead the Food and Grocery Code of Conduct review amidst growing concerns of supermarket price gouging leaving a significant gap between supermarket prices and what farmers get paid. Rachel Chambers, CEO of Queensland Fruit & Vegetable Growers, spoke to the ABC about the upcoming review and industry’s strong desire for the code to be made mandatory. Listen here.
  3. If your farm has been impacted by the recent South East Queensland storms, you can now apply for financial assistance that includes concessional loans to help you with your business recovery. Primary producers can also report damage or losses via the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries’ Disaster Impact Survey.
  4. Cotton Australia’s 2024 Australian Cotton Leadership Program participants have been announced, with six Queenslanders among the 16 people from the cotton industry selected for the program. Learn more here.

  10. The Industry Kickstarter grant is offered by the UQ Agri-Food Innovation Alliance to help academics and industry conduct co-designed and collaborative research that will have a clear pathway of impact within the agri-food sector.
