Environment 1

Australian farmers lead the world in sustainability and best practice natural resource management, with increasing awareness on the economic value of natural capital.

Farmers must be supported to maintain productivity and profitability while protecting Queensland’s natural environment and exploring natural capital opportunities.

QFF believes sustainability will be best achieved through innovative, voluntary on-farm practices and a collaborative approach that brings a wholistic approach to achieving environmental outcomes, increased opportunities for agriculture and a prosperous future for regional communities.

QFF acknowledges and celebrates the achievements of farmers using innovative approaches and best management practices (BMPs) and supports them through various initiatives.

Our areas of focus

Supporting sustainable agriculture

There is a need for government to:

  • develop environmental policies in genuine collaboration with the agriculture sector and regional communities to advance the industry
  • provide clear strategic direction and foster collaboration to strengthen ecosystem leadership and culture
  • recognise agriculture’s contribution to improving the Reef’s water quality and support ongoing farmer innovation
  • maintain or increase investment in voluntary Best Management Practice (BMP) programs.

Climate and environmental management

There is a need for government to:

  • review state guidelines on environmental offsets to ensure transparency and alignment with the needs of the agricultural sector and regional communities
  • ensure emission reduction strategies are integrated into a broader climate adaptation framework
  • support the agriculture sector in preparing for a carbon-constrained future, both financially and operationally.

Carbon and biodiversity opportunities

There is a need for government to:

  • support farmers to baseline carbon and biodiversity metrics for their enterprises
  • align government efforts across portfolios to maximise opportunities and mitigate risks
  • provide incentives for managing protected areas that enhance farming operations while delivering environmental benefits
  • strengthen the governance framework that oversees the carbon and biodiversity market to provide increased transparency and build trust in the emerging opportunities ahead.
