10 Things to Know from QFF – 11 April 2022

The Federal Election has been called for 21 May 2022. The 6 week campaign will be a long one (for all of us!). QFF looks forward to hearing from all parties on their vision and action plans for the agriculture sector.

2. This week’s release of the Reef Water Quality Report Card 2020 shows the positive impact being made by farmers to help improve the quality of water flowing to the Great Barrier Reef. Learn more about the progress towards the Reef 2050 Water Quality Improvement Plan targets through the interactive report card at reportcard.reefplan.qld.gov.au

3. QFF President’s column comments on the Federal Budget – “While there was some spends that concentrated on aspects of these challenges, this Federal Budget was perhaps more focused on a shorter-term outcome that did not inspire us with the vision that is required to work towards solutions to complex issues.” Read more here

4. The 8 Drought Resilience Adoption and Innovation Hubs will receive an extra $4 million to work together on projects that will build drought resilience on a regional and national scale Find out more about the Hubs and their activities.

6. Have your say! Thousands of Queenslanders will have the opportunity to give their views on energy usage, electric vehicles and emerging technologies following the launch of Australia’s most comprehensive study of household energy use. The Queensland Household Energy Survey is run annually by Powerlink in conjunction with Energex and Ergon Energy, as part of the Energy Queensland group. You can access the survey here

7. Save the date for the Queensland AgWorkforce Summit on 3 – 5 August 2022. The summit is an excellent opportunity to network and learn about innovative strategies that have worked in attracting, retaining and skilling workforce. Agribusiness professionals will collaborate, learn and share experiences that will help agribusiness acquire and retain the workforce that they need to grow. For more info, go to the Summit website.

8. Capacity building continues to be a major focus for the Enhanced Extension Coordination in the Great Barrier Reef project in DAF and includes a dedicated training and development program to build extension capacity in public and private extension networks. Extension officers in agriculture are invited to share their training needs so that they can be prioritised for development support. The survey closes 12 April 2022. Take the survey here.

9. A new Interstate Plant Quarantine RIFA map showing South East Queensland areas restricted for interstate market access of fire ant carriers has been released. The map is also available on the internet at Fire Ant Biosecurity Zones. This map shows the area where restrictions apply in Queensland for movement of fire ant carriers interstate. The map enables you to recognise and understand changes to the restricted area over time.  For March to April comparison, there has been a small extension to the restricted area in the Scenic Rim.

10. Ever wanted to learn about carbon farming? The Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture held an online information session: Carbon farming: introductory principles, tools for accounting and market risks. It is worth the watch!
