10 things to know from QFF – 20 November 2017

  1. Both major parties have released their agricultural policy platforms. LNP’s HERE. Labor’s HERE. QFF will be releasing its election analysis and wrap up of parties later this week.
  2. A strong & thriving agricultural sector delivers jobs. This is why QFF has called on political candidates to invest in jobs and skills in Queensland’s agricultural sector. Media release HERE.
  3. Every year the Australian Government spends over $560 million on post-disaster relief, with this number on the rise as climate variability increases. QFF has called for an overhaul of natural disaster support & funding HERE.
  4. Landholders and farmers can expect to know by mid-2018 how the controversial inland rail will be constructed across 16km of the Condamine floodplain.
  5. This state election Queensland farmers are urging the next government to get serious about developing an approach that properly addresses planning and protection of prime agricultural land. QFF statement HERE & QCL column HERE.
  6. QFF industry member CANEGROWERS has sought a clear commitment from State Election candidates to uphold competitive sugar marketing under the Sugar Industry Act. Media release HERE.
  7. Queensland’s cotton gins are struggling under the high costs of electricity which continues to challenge ongoing viability of the business and those farmers it supports. Details HERE.
  8. Category C natural disaster recovery grants of $25,000 are now available for affected farmers in the North Burnett region. Details HERE. QFF is also hosting flood recovery workshops in the region this week in Monto (22/11) & Bundaberg (23/11).
  9. Agriculture accounts for only about 14% of the estimated 380,000 quad bikes being used in Australia but the sector is responsible for a disproportionately higher rate of deaths and injuries according to a recent ACCC report.
