The Queensland Farmers’ Federation (QFF) has congratulated Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and the Labor Party on being re-elected at the weekend’s State Election.
QFF CEO Dr Georgina Davis welcomed several agriculture focused election commitments from the Labor Party and said that it was now time to deliver for the sector.
“QFF welcomes the Labor Party’s third term of government and will continue to work constructively with the government to represent our members’ interests and achieve our vision for a thriving agriculture sector,” Dr Davis said.
“Central to achieving this will be the implementation of election promises such as the 50 percent reduction in the price of irrigation water for Queensland’s farmers, greater access to agricultural skills and training, boosting investment in biosecurity, the addition of regenerative agriculture to the Land Restoration Fund, and building new and much needed infrastructure to support agriculture.”
“Immediate policy change is also needed from the government to address emerging issues including the restrictive planning regimes that deter new investment in agri-processing and agritourism ventures, the erosion of the right to farm, excessive green and red tape which is holding back our bioenergy industry, and unnecessary administrative burden associated with some legislation that increases business costs whilst providing no additional environmental outcomes.”
“If action is not taken, the cumulative impact of policies from all levels of government, will become insurmountable and further challenge the profitability and viability of many farm businesses.”
“The election result has provided a degree of certainty for the state’s agricultural sector for the next four years, and we now need a clear and well-articulated vision that supports and grows the sector.”
“Agriculture is the only sector with the ability to deliver food security, environmental sustainability and economic opportunity. In order to achieve this, the regulatory and policy settings must be an enabler and not a constrainer.”
