The Queensland Farmers’ Federation has welcomed the decision by new Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to transfer water policy into the agriculture portfolio at the Federal level.
QFF President Joanne Grainger said the merging of Water and Agriculture policy into one portfolio sent a clear message of intent that his new Turnbull Government is serious about supporting and growing agriculture in Queensland.
“Hopefully under the guidance and direction of the Agriculture Ministry the social and economic impacts associated with the Murray-Darling Basin Plan will now receive greater attention.”
“QFF are entirely committed to the Murray-Darling Basin Plan in balancing environmental, social and economic factors; and I welcome the Turnbull Government’s commitment to achieve this outcome.”
“This move comes at an important time as the release of the Northern Basin scientific review is imminent and a number of key decisions on the future of the plan are due in the next couple months.”
“Without seeing the full detail of the plan, it does appear as through the National Party has been able to deliver on its commitment to regional communities through this new Coalition agreement”.
