The Queensland Farmers’ Federation (QFF) has welcomed funding to deliver an agricultural preparedness project to provide primary producers with the right tools and resources to better prepare for a flood.
QFF CEO Dr Georgina Davis thanked the Queensland and Australian Governments for their support through the 2017-18 Natural Disaster Resilience Program as farmers’ eyes look to the skies this storm season.
“QFF industry members Growcom and Queensland Dairyfarmers’ Organisation have partnered to deliver the project with initial focus on tree crop, vegetable and dairy producers in the South East and Wide Bay regions of Queensland who have previous flood experience,” Dr Davis said.
“The project will develop a flood mapping tool and risk based, on-farm flood management plans which will assist producers to understand and mitigate the potential impacts of flooding on their properties.”
“Mapping will be supported by a workshop and on-farm discussions with producers to assist them in developing an understanding of the flood risk to their farming enterprises, and to look at options to mitigate flood impacts long-term through altered management decisions and strategies.”
“For example, identifying future beneficial infrastructure projects including road access to farms to minimise supply chain impact and repairing river embankment erosion that cuts into farm property.”
“With an improved understanding of flood vulnerabilities for specific agriculture industries and farm locations, the project will provide benefits for Queensland’s agriculture sector.”
“With severe weather events predicted to be more frequent and intense in the future, this project is the beginning of an ongoing and regular discussion that will enable effective flood preparedness outcomes.”
