Queensland farmers welcome end to Backpacker Tax saga

The 18 month long backpacker tax saga has finally been resolved with the compromise 15 per cent tax rate passing both houses of the Australian Parliament last night.

Queensland Farmers’ Federation (QFF) President Stuart Armitage welcomed the last minute resolution reached by the Coalition Government and the Greens.

“The entire backpacker tax episode will be remembered as a disappointing chapter in Australian politics where farmers were used as pawns in an unnecessary, highly politicised power struggle.”

“QFF is satisfied that the 15 per cent tax rate restores Australia’s competitiveness as a destination for backpackers.”

“Queensland farmers finally have the certainty we have been calling for and deserve.”

QFF thanks and acknowledges the sustained and coordinated lobbying efforts of campaign partners; QFF industry members Growcom and Cotton Australia; the National Farmers’ Federation; and the Queensland Tourism Industry Council.

QFF is the united voice of intensive agriculture in Queensland. It is a federation that represents the interests of 15 of Queensland’s peak rural industry organisations, which in turn collectively represent more than 13,000 primary producers across the state.
