Reef Alliance outlines vision for Farming and the Great Barrier Reef

The Chair of Queensland’s Reef Alliance will address the Rural Press Club (Queensland) 15 September on the important relationship between agriculture and the iconic Great Barrier Reef.

Long-time rural industry advocate and former Queensland Farmers’ Federation (QFF) CEO, Ruth Wade, who was recently appointed Chair of the Reef Alliance, will present her vision of a future with responsible and sustainable agriculture prospering alongside the Reef.

QFF President Stuart Armitage stated that QFF is proud to be the facilitator of the Reef Alliance partnership between agricultural industries, natural resource management groups and environmental campaigner WWF.

“Reef Alliance Chair Ruth Wade brings over 25 years of experience in agricultural representation and business management to an issue that continues to attract national and international headlines.”

“Progress is already underway through the Reef Alliance partnership and the industry specific Best Management Practice (BMP) programs that mitigate losses of soil, fertiliser and pesticides from farms and improve water quality entering the Great Barrier Reef lagoons,” said Mr Armitage.

“The best way to achieve real practical change in the agricultural sector is through leading by example, providing incentives and giving land holders a sense of ownership towards the change.”

Reef Alliance Chair Ruth Wade thanked the Rural Press Club for the opportunity and looked forward to presenting on such an important and topical issue.

“The Reef Alliance represents an effective and ground-breaking development in catchment landscape management in Australia by bringing together industry, regional NRM bodies and the conservation sector with a common goal of assisting to secure the future health of the Reef,” said Mrs. Wade.

“The partnership provides a mechanism to lead and co-ordinate an adaptive program of land use change and to monitor, evaluate and report those changes at a local and Reef wide scale.”

“It will be great to be able to present the Reef Alliance’s vision in front of an audience eager to learn more about agriculture’s future alongside the Reef.”

QFF and the Reef Alliance invite you to join us at the September lunch to hear Mrs. Wade’s perspectives on the future of farming and its relationship to the Great Barrier Reef.
