10 Things to Know – 22 July

  1. Cotton Australia’s General Manager Michael Murray joined local government representatives from all over the Murray-Darling Basin for the annual Murray-Darling Association conference, taking the opportunity to dispel several myths about the cotton industry. Read more here. Last week the Australian Government began its latest round of Murray-Darling Basin water buybacks. Mapping from ABARES ranks Northern Basin communities, including St George, as some of the most vulnerable to buybacks. Read more here.
  2. The Senate Environment and Communications References Committee has released its report into Glencore’s proposed carbon capture and storage (CCS) project in the Great Artesian Basin (GAB) supporting the advocacy efforts of QFF and other industry and community leaders. The report recommends that states and territories legislate bans on CCS in the GAB, and that the EPBC act’s water trigger be updated to include onshore CCS . Read more here.
  3. The Queensland Biosecurity Grants Program is open, with three $25,000 innovation grants and six $10,000 education grants available to enhance preparedness against biosecurity threats. All sectors are encouraged to apply here by Wednesday, 31 July 2024.
  4. QFF is hosting two free farm business resilience workshops in Theodore and Biloela this month, covering the many opportunities and challenges of running a primary production enterprise and will feature guest speakers from BDO, Cotton Australia, Rural Aid, and QRIDA among others. Registrations close this Friday 26 July.

  6. The Queensland Government’s Women in Industry grants are one-off grants of up to $150,000 for projects that help women progress into leadership roles in male-dominated industries. Apply here by 9 August 2024.
  7. Townsville is gearing up to host Australia’s pineapple industry this week for their annual Pineapple Field Days, organised by the Queensland Fruit & Vegetable Growers in conjunction with the Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries on behalf of Australian Pineapples. Read more here.
  8. QFF recently provided a submission to the Senate Select Committee on the Impact of Climate Risk on Insurance Premiums and Availability. Read it here.
