10 Things to Know – 23 October 2023

  1. Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced the Local Energy Partnerships Initiative at last week’s LGAQ 2023 Conference. The initiative is aimed at working with landholders and communities to ensure locals benefit from energy projects in their regions. The Partnerships initiative will also include the establishment of the first Community Leader Energy Councils to formalise channels for engagement on the first renewable energy zones and the remit of the GasFields Commission will be expanded to include renewable energy.
  2. Are you looking to get your foot in the door in the growing AgTech industry? QFF is looking for participants for a 12-month paid work placement program. Apply your IT and/or agriculture skills with a leading AgTech or agronomy organisation operating in Queensland. Express your interest here by Sunday, 12 November.
  3. Last week National Water Weekcelebrated the valuable resource of water with the theme of ‘United by Water’ providing a reminder of how important water is to us all. During Water Week, the Queensland Government released the new Queensland Water Strategy – a sector-wide strategy for the future of water management across the state.
  4. Sparke Helmore Lawyers have written two articles covering what farmers need to know about unfair contract terms and the proposed Fair Work Legislation Amendment.   6. QFF joins NGIQ in farewelling their outgoing CEO Ian Atkinson as he takes an international opportunity. Ian’s departure has left an exciting opportunity, with the CEO role open to someone new to lead Queensland’s state peak body for the professional nursery and garden industry.
  7. Sunday, 15 October was International Day of Rural Women, a chance to celebrate the significant contribution of women to agriculture and rural communities. Last week’s QFF President’s Column which reflects on the critical role of women in Australian agriculture. Read it here.
  8. The AgTech and Logistics Hub are taking registrations for their OpenGround Demo Day that will feature innovators and scaleups with solutions to transform crop and pasture management. See their innovations and connect with industry at this major event on Thursday, 23 November. Register here.
  9. Skills Insight are seeking people with experience in the agriculture sector to provide input into how an agricultural apprenticeship could work at upcoming workshops in Longreach and Toowoomba on Tuesday, 31 October and Thursday, 2 November, respectively. Register here.
  10. Parliament has announced a Senate Inquiry into Red Imported Fire Ants (RIFA) and Varroa mite, which will examine the potential costs and impacts of the spread of RIFA across Australia. QFF and peak body members joined in calling upon all levels of government to come together to adequately fund the eradication of these pests which pose a significant threat to industry and communities.
