10 Things to Know – 4 December

  1. Agriculture groups nationally are expressing disappointment at a deal struck between the federal government and two independents to allow the passage of the Government’s legislation to rewrite the 2012 Murray-Darling Basin Plan. Read more here. QFF raised concerns around the proposed changes in our submission urging the government to focus on alternative options, including on-farm savings, and to move away from buybacks.   2. The National Farmers’ Federation, Australian Lot Feeders Association, Queensland Conservation Council, AgForce Queensland and Australian Country Choice have joined QFF and a growing number of industry groups and communities members calling for the proposed carbon capture and storage (CCS) project in the Great Artesian Basin to be abandoned.
  3. Cotton Australia has welcomed enforcement action targeting spray drift, with a new tool for easy reporting of spray drift. The tool helps cotton farmers to photograph and report drift incidents so other growers and industry stakeholders can be alerted as quickly as possible. Read more here.
  4. Registrations are now open for the Moshie developed National Lean Leaders Program. The program is for current and emerging business leaders on sustaining continuous business improvement. All Queensland primary producers that have developed a Farm Business Resilience plan are eligible, with QFF offering up to 6 placements at no cost to farmers as part of the Farm Business Resilience Program.   5. Queensland Fruit and Vegetable Growers have shared three simple ways you can support their #WeGiveAFork campaign. Pledge your support and share a message with Queensland fruit, vegetable, and nut growers, use the campaign hashtag, or send your local councilor or Member of Parliament a pre-drafted letter of support for the campaign.   6. Canegrowers is calling on Sugar Terminals Limited to take the first steps on the long road to repairing its relationship with growers, having presented their expectations of the incoming board around terminal ownership and operations, and pricing transparency. Full media release here.
  7. The Queensland Government is supporting Queensland agriculture innovators and ecosystem leaders to attend evokeAG 2024 to hear about the latest global agrifood innovation and tech. If you are interested in joining the Queensland mission apply here by Thursday, 7 December.
  8. Queensland’s local governments have disaster dashboards and/or websites that provide important information to support local communities during and after disaster events. You can find your local council disaster dashboard here containing information such as weather warnings, river heights, road conditions and closures, phone and power outages and more.
