10 Things to Know from QFF – 14 November 2022

  1. QFF is home to agricultural peak bodies and brings together commodity groups from across Queensland. Last week QFF was pleased to hold its General Board Meeting and last General Board and Council meeting for the year.  Read QFF’s Year in Review HERE.
  2. QFF members Growcom have raised a number of key considerations in their submission to the Federal Government on its reform agenda “Building a stronger Pacific and Timor-Leste family” including the potential implications of post code expansion on agriculture and the challenge of being able to source accommodation.   3. A public discussion paper has been released by the Federal government seeking input and ideas into the best way to go about developing a long-term sustainable biosecurity funding model. The Biosecurity Sustainable Funding discussion paper and the opportunity to provide feedback is available HERE closing on 21st November 2022.
  4. QFF members the Nursery and Gardens Industry Queensland (NGIQ) have developed a number of resources to support their members in building their disaster preparedness. Check out NGIQ’s emergency and disaster planning resources HERE.
  5. Last month, the Treasury Laws Amendment (More competition, Better Prices) Bill 2022 passed both Houses of Parliament which will mean new and tougher penalties for companies that breach competition and consumer laws. Whilst these changes are a positive step towards a more level playing field, there is more work to be done. If we are to achieve competitive markets in our food supply chains, which will lead to improved food affordability, we need to ensure price transparency, and continue to work to stop bargaining power imbalances.   6. NFF have raised concerns about the impact rushing through workplace relations changes may have on food supply chains and further food price inflation. NFF’s concerns are outlined HERE.
  7. November is connectivity month and the perfect time to get to know the Regional Tech Hub which provides independent, free advice about telecommunications services for regional, rural and remote Australians to help them improve their connectivity. This service was specifically established to assist people who live and work in regional and remote Australia to realize the benefits of being digitally connected.   8. Successful businesswoman and Order of Australia medal recipient Julia Spicer has been appointed as Queensland’s new Chief Entrepreneur. Julia will replace outgoing Chief Entrepreneur Wayne Gerard who will continue to provide invaluable experience as a member of the Brisbane 2032 Legacy Committee. Julia will commence the role in December. How fabulous to have a regionally based Chief Entrepreneur. The official announcement HERE.
  9. Biosecurity Queensland is urging growers to remain vigilant after the root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne enterolobii (guava root-knot nematode), was detected in the Northern Territory as well as a Movement Control Order having been issued for polyphagous shot-hole borer (PSHB) and its carriers, following recent detections of the pest in Western Australia.
