10 Things to Know from QFF – 31 January 2022

  1. QFF has partnered with Airbnb and Regionality to design a new regulatory framework for rural land to unlock Queensland’s potential as the nation’s agritourism capital.   2. Queensland and New South Wales farmers could win one of two $500 discounts off their energy bills for participating in a research study aiming to better understand how they consider and choose electricity tariffs for their agricultural operations. Get involved HERE.
  3. While Queensland’s agricultural sector has an established history of managing its waste streams effectively, illegal dumping on public and private land has caused ongoing issues for landholders. Read QFF’s Queensland Country Life column HERE.

  5. The last week brought with it a couple of important milestones in terms of an improved outlook for labour availability, for the entire economy, not just horticulture.   6. Dairy farms in central Queensland were impacted by recent flooding to varying severity with farm roads washed away, irrigation systems damaged and fences taken down or caught with debris.   8. Applications for round 2 of the Australian Department of Agriculture, Water and Environment‘s Carbon + Biodiversity Pilot are open until 3 March. Farmers in the Fitzroy Basin who are willing to plant native trees, manage vegetation or regenerate waterways and hillsides, can apply now HERE.
  9. The Queensland Government has begun public consultation on the establishment of an independent environmental regulator. Submissions will be used to inform future decisions around a potential independent Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). For more information and to have your say by 6 February HERE.
  10. A granular fertiliser plant at Mort & Co’s Grassdale Feedlot, is being commissioned with an annual production capacity of 20,000 tonnes and plans to increase it to 100,000t by early 2023. The move is believed to be a first for an Australian feedlot. Read more HERE.
