Cyclone Marcia Agricultural Recovery Project Update

The Queensland Farmers’ Federation Cyclone Marcia recovery and resilience project is currently at the half way point. To date the partnership between Agforce and QFF industry members the Nursery Garden Industry Queensland (NGIQ), Growcom and Queensland Daryfarmers’ Organisation (QDO) has resulted in support for affected primary producers. The project has used industry recovery officer expertise to engage producers in recovery and resilience throughout the region.

QDO has initiated a feed testing regime with all producers in the effected region to help producers restore the productive capacity of their herds. Producers have been provided with 3 feed sampling bags and were asked to provide samples to the Feed Central testing Laboratory in Toowoomba. These samples are then returned with advice by a QDAF Nutritionist.

NGIQ members in Yeppoon and Rockhampton have made a positive return to consistent trading now. The small number of engaged growers in the region have embraced the projects emphasis on recovery through commitments to best practice, imbedding resilience measures and business planning. All participants now have a clear medium range plan for their business.

Agforce and Growcom have a series of field days and workshops running from mid-May till July with an emphasis on natural disaster reliance and preparedness. QFF encourage farmers and producers to attend these events as they will be an invaluable resource for that ‘next big event’.

The project will be funded through the Australian and Queensland Government’s jointly funded Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements Category D recovery funding package announced in June 2015.  $750,000 has been allocated through the Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF) to engage Industry Recovery Officers to work directly with affected primary producers to assist their disaster planning and resilience for future natural disasters.
