Reflecting on the challenges and opportunities that defined Queensland agriculture in 2025

As we begin a new year, it’s worth reflecting on the challenges and opportunities that defined Queensland agriculture in 2025 - a year marked by strong engagement, meaningful reform and close collaboration across our members, producers, industry partners and government.

Early in the year, QFF and industry partners welcomed the reinstatement of the 80:20 funding split for works on the Bruce Highway. QFF continues to ensure that agriculture is considered in all future works on the Bruce through our role on the Bruce Highway Advisory Council.

Queensland experienced catastrophic flooding across the state in 2025, particularly in the West and Far North. In May, after a decade of advocacy by QFF, CANEGROWERS Australia, Cotton Australia and Queensland Fruit & Vegetable Growers, the definition of primary producer was updated, expanding access to disaster assistance and allowing crop replacement to be included in disaster grants.

Project highlights included the Crisis Communications Training Program and SmartAg Queensland. In 2024–25, SmartAg delivered safety training to 2,653 farmers across 35 growing regions, while the Crisis Communications Training Program gave growers and industry representatives the skills to manage crisis situations with confidence.

Biosecurity in the Boardroom was another highlight. The initiative delivered by QFF in partnership with Biosecurity Queensland (Department of Primary Industries (Queensland)), has helped elevate biosecurity as a key risk across all sectors – not just agriculture.

Our major event for 2025 was the National Agriculture Day Breakfast, where more than 300 guests joined QFF and the Premier, Hon David Crisafulli MP. The strong turnout was a fitting reflection of the respect Queenslanders hold for agriculture and the contribution our sector makes to regional communities and the state’s economy.

2026 will be an important year for our members, with CANEGROWERS marking 100 years, Cotton Australia’s Cotton Conference returning to the Gold Coast, and QFVG welcoming a new CEO. QFF looks forward to working with our members to drive a productive and resilient future for Queensland agriculture.
