Queensland's farming sector is facing some of the most complex conditions in recent history but alongside the challenges, there's real opportunity. To meet both head-on QFF needs to remain front and centre of pivotal decisions, and that starts with strong leadership.
As a board, we’re thrilled to welcome Kylie Porter as QFF's new Chief Executive Officer. Kylie joins us at a pivotal moment for Queensland agriculture, and I couldn't be more confident in what she brings to the role.
Kylie's deep understanding of regional Queensland, her strong track record with government at local, state and federal levels, and her genuine passion for the future of agriculture make her the right person to lead QFF forward.
I also want to acknowledge outgoing CEO Jo Sheppard, who has been instrumental in shaping QFF's impact and influence, and I know she is proud to be passing the baton to someone who will bring her own style of rigorous leadership.
Kylie officially joins QFF on 27 July 2026, and I look forward to introducing her across our network in the weeks ahead.
Turning attention now to the release of Queensland's State Budget last week, I think we can all agree that given the compounding operating challenges facing agriculture and regional communities there has been a critical need to restore business confidence.
Treasurer the Hon. David Janetzki's second budget delivers on this front, demonstrating fiscal restraint while still committing to critical funding for agriculture through roads and infrastructure including upgrades to the Bruce Highway along with $100 million towards the Country Roads Connect and Betterment Programs.
It was pleasing to see biosecurity receive continued attention, especially given the recent confirmation of H5 Avian Influenza in Australia and other ongoing pest and disease incursions impacting primary production, including varroa mite and fire ants.
A focus on fuel security, both through increasing storage capability and new fuel-producing opportunities, is also of interest and is a measure we will be monitoring closely.
With the Federal Government's tax, environmental and disaster recovery policy reforms still frustrating and impacting primary producers and regional communities alike, this State Budget offers modest but welcome steps forward — including its absence of new taxes!
