10 Things to Know – 11 December

  1. Canegrowers are calling on all stakeholders, from growers to government, to get on board with enabling policy and investment in Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF). While the production of SAF is safe and technically viable it would require a 300 percent increase in sugar production to meet demand. Read more here.
  2. Many Queensland cotton growers have an extra spring in their step following recent rain events which are expected to boost the crop yield by between 100,000 and half a million bales, with Cotton Australia General Manager Michael Murray saying that the rain had come at just the right time for dryland cotton growers who otherwise may not have planted a crop.   6. Applications for the prestigious Gary Sansom Scholarship are now open. The $35,000 scholarship is open to students undertaking postgraduate study at an Australian University who are eager to contribute to the Australian chicken meat industry through research or leadership. The scholarship is named for former AgriFutures Chicken Meat Advisory Panel Chair and former QFF President Gary Sansom who was himself a great leader of the chicken meat industry and advocate for Queensland agriculture.
  7. The Queensland Biosecurity Mates Ambassador Program is now looking for six emerging industry leaders and/or experts in agriculture, science, environment, and technology to help advocate and educate the community in biosecurity awareness. Read more here. Applications close 9 February 2024.
  8. Queensland communities can now apply for a share of $7 million to deliver faster, more effective flood warnings, with applications now open for the latest round of the Flood Warning Infrastructure Network

  10. ABARES is forecasting Australian agricultural production value to fall by $16 billion to $78 billion in 2023-24, a 17% decrease from the record value of $94 billion in 2022-23. The forecast decrease would still result in the third highest value on record. Read more here.
