10 things to know from QFF – 5 June 17

  1. Farmers have been failed by the Queensland Competition Authority (QCA) with its final determination that electricity prices would increase in the next year. QFF has slammed the decision as ‘price gouging’. QFF statement HERE.
  2. QFF industry members CANEGROWERS & Cotton Australia are calling for government intervention to stop soaring retail power prices for Queensland farmers. See their statements HERE & HERE.
  3. The Rural Press Club (RPC) is hosting a lunch on 5 July to discuss much-desired insurance tailored to meet farmers’ needs and the possibilities for Queensland. Register HERE.
  4. Queensland is facing an urgent and pressing need to build Biosecurity Queensland’s (BQ) capacity to respond to incursions. See QFF’s QCL column HERE.
  5. QFF Energy Savers is hosting an Energy and Water Efficiency Field Day on 28 June in Gatton in conjunction with QFF industry members Flower AssociationNursery and Garden Industry Queensland (NGIQ) and Growcom.

  7. The Queensland Government has partnered with QFF, giving $1.1 million to support large-scale land management practice changes in the Great Barrier Reef.
  8. Queensland AgTech startups are invited to apply for the Advance Queensland Mission to Israel from 5-14 August. The trip is an opportunity to meet the world’s most innovative companies revolutionising agriculture.
  9. Deputy PM Barnaby Joyce has spoken out against $1 litre milk on World Milk Day. Meanwhile QFF industry member Queensland Dairyfarmers’ Organisation (QDO) has thanked consumers for supporting local dairy farmers.
  10. Organic fruit and vegetables are on the rise. QFF industry member Australian Organic has revealed organic packaged foods were worth $696 million in Australia in 2016.
